AFR Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Medgyessy to visit Denmark

08.07.02

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Medgyessy will visit Denmark on Wednesday 10 July. Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen will meet and subsequently have lunch with Prime Minister Medgyessy at Marienborg.

Hungary is currently negotiating accession to the EU. Together with Poland and the Czech Republic, Hungary became a member of NATO in 1999.

On the occasion of the visit, Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen states:

”I have given high priority to meeting my colleagues from the candidate countries.

The negotiations on Hungary's accession will, naturally, be at the centre of my discussions with the Hungarian Prime Minister. Hungary has made good progress in the negotiations, and I look forward to getting a first-hand account of the negotiations as seen by Hungary.

It is the ambition of the Danish EU Presidency to complete the enlargement negotiations with up to ten countries at the Copenhagen Summit in December. I hope and expect that Hungary will be among these countries.

Among the other topics for our discussions will be the future of the EU and the work of the European Convention on this subject. Furthermore, we shall discuss the enlargement of NATO.”
