17.06.02

Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen will meet Spanish Prime Minister and current President of the European Council José Maria Aznar on 18 June to discuss the agenda for the EU Summit in Seville on 21 and 22 June with the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Aznar will be accompanied among others by EU foreign policy co-ordinator, Mr. Javier Solana.

The issues will include, among other things, the EU rules on asylum and immigration, the negotiations on the EU enlargement and reforms of the work and procedures of the Council and the EU Summits.

On the occasion of the visit, the Prime Minister states:

'I look forward to my meeting with Prime Minister José Maria Aznar.

The Summit in Seville will be an interesting summit. Denmark has a great interest in seeing progress made on the important issue of the EU rules on asylum and immigration.

Further, we are going to review the good momentum in the negotiations on the enlargement during the Spanish EU Presidency, and we shall endeavour to reform the Council and the EU Summits. Both must be made more efficient for the EU to be ready for the coming major enlargement.

I shall also discuss with Prime Minister Aznar how the Seville Summit may contribute to the preparation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.

The Seville Summit is especially interesting to Denmark because it is the final summit before Denmark assumes the EU Presidency.”
