EU Leaders Discuss Defence and Ukraine at Summit in Copenhagen

On Wednesday, October 1st, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen will host an informal summit of EU Heads of State and Government at Christiansborg Palace. The President of the European Council, the President of the European Commission, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, the President of the European Parliament, as well as Heads of State and Government from the 27 EU Member States will take part. The President of Ukraine will participate via video link.

The two key themes of the day will be European defence and security as well as Ukraine.

“We cannot take our freedom for granted. It’s important for Europe to take greater responsibility for its own security. Europe must be able to defend itself. This requires strength, political will and cooperation within the European Union. And it compels us to turn words into action and increase the military and financial support for Ukraine. Here the European Union has a big responsibility. My goal is that, today, we will be able take another step in the right direction. And show that Europe stands united in safeguarding our collective security,” says Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

An informal meeting of EU Heads of State or Government is typically held once during each Presidency of the Council. On these occasions, leaders gather in the country holding the rotating Presidency. Denmark will hold the Presidency until December 31st, 2025.
